Autumn

It has been spectacular to see a carpet of colourful leaves covering our school grounds upon our return to school this week and so we decided to use autumn leaves as inspiration for our learning.

We went on a walk around our school grounds to hunt for the inspiration behind our writing... LEAVES!

Then we looked carefully at our leaves and ran our fingers over them. We went on to build a word bank of what we could see and feel and what actions leaves make as they fall to the ground.

Here are a just a few of the pieces of writing from our class of 'wild writers' this week.

By Jett
(In autumn the leaves
spin. They are cool
when they are
spinning)

By Nevaya
( In autumn the leaves race
 down to the ground. My
leaf has holes and it
feels soft)

By Briana
(In autumn the leaves flow down the
trees gently. My leaf is crunchy.
It looks like a flower with cracks.
It is easy to break. My
leaf is purple)

We were enjoying our exploration of leaves so much that we decided to carry out a science experiment to find out why leaves change colour.

We discovered that leaves contain 'chlorophyll' - this gives the leaves their green colour. Over night two of our test specimens had the colour 'sucked' out of them. So we learned that in some crazy way leaves begin to loose the chlorophyll within them and the layer of colours deep within begin to show.

But wait...there's more!

We then used our leaves that we had collected to create a leaf picture inspired by the book
'Leaf Man.'

Next week we will use our completed pictures as more
inspiration for our writing. Why don't you pop in to check out our leaf pictures and stories
that will complete our autumn learning adventures?
